BASICS for Building a Small Business Tab Advertiser
by Larry Alger

1. Make a list of the goods or services you want to promote.
2. Gather the materials to build the pages. You can use product brochures, artwork and any photos of the items you want to include in your pages. Half tone photos used in color brochures do not reproduce as well as regular color prints and should be the last choice for any art work in your advertising tab. Be sure to ask your suppliers about art work they availability for their products. Many manufacturers can provide photos or even digital art on CD-ROM. If you do not have art work for any item you have in stock and want to include, donŐt worry. Arrangements to take any photos you need for your tab pages can be made with the newspaper.

3. Set the prices you want to advertise and write a description for each item on sale. Be sure to make an ordered list of both the artwork and the text for each item. Using the list you made in step one, label the art work for the first item #1 and the text about that item #1a, the next item art #2 and text #2a, and so on down the list. The number of items you want to display will help determine the page lay out designs to use.

4. Take a sheet of paper and do a rough lay out with boxes drawn in to represent the text areas, photos and graphics on the page. Be sure and number the boxes in the lay out to match the list of items. The tab page size is 10 inches wide by 13 inches long, so a lot of text and graphics can be included. Be creative, tell YOUR story and have fun with it! Our designers can adjust the type and graphic sizes to fit and make your pages look great too.

Each advertising tab will need to reflect the kind of business promoted. Auto and Implement dealers may want to feature photos of a few of their vehicles in stock, and then show the rest of stock for sale by listing those items with a brief description. Manufacturers can show new models, offer customer testimonials, list dealers, or make special buy direct offers. Banks and hospitals can use the tab format to keep their names and services in the minds of the community. A restaurant may want to use a more entertaining format. The restaurant tab front page could be set up like newspaper stories about the store, history of the community, pieces using humor and trivia to amuse customers. The interior pages would display the menu. Night Clubs can use a tab to promote special events and live stage acts.
